Šibenik
This mediterranean city only 30 km from our apartment.
Šibenik is one the oldest towns in Croatia. It was first mentioned in a charter of one of the greatest Croatian rulers-King Petar Krešimir IV. It receives an official town status in 1290 when Šibenik diocese was established.
After a period rule of Croatian and Croato-Hungarian kings, it was taken over by Venice in the 15th ct. and remained under its rule for almost four centuries. During this period Šibenik prospered and its culture blossomed.
The most beautiful and most famous building in Šibenik is the monumental St. Jakob s Cathedral which was listed in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2000.
Building of the cathedral bagan in the 15th ct. and lasted for over hundred years. It is unique in the world because it was built exclusively from stone without using any binding materials. The cathedral is also special because it was started in gothic, and finished in renaissance style.
The Central town square has been a center of public and social life for centuries. Tthe square is surroundedby most magnificient buildings in Šibenik.
Various events are still held today in this square.
